After 10 truly wonderful, blessed and unforgettable years of marriage, Eric surprised me with an amazing anniversary trip to Maui. He flew his parents in to stay with the boys and off we went the week of my 37th birthday! I really don’t know if I could pick one singular thing that stood out above the rest. Perhaps the drive to Hana with the waterfalls and black sand beaches…or maybe bumping into three sea turtles while snorkeling just outside our hotel…or perhaps just soaking in the prettiest sunset ever? Our first Hawaiian adventure was as relaxing and beautiful as it was memorable.
We stayed in Wailea (on the west side of the island) and quickly discovered there wasn’t an ugly place on the island. Our first stop was the dense rainforest of the Iao Valley and then hiking the remote Waihee Ridge Trail. Â We ended up drenched from the clouds and eventual downpour. No doubt, the views were well worth it.
And it’s no wonder Maui is known for its beautiful sunsets.
We caught a luau our first night on the island. The food and dancing were amazing. Eric was even invited to participate – what a good sport!
The road to Hana was in a word, unforgettable. In a phrase, it’s the closest thing I could imagine to the Garden of Eden. Lush with vegetation, the caves, hidden waterfalls and black sand beaches were just awesome.
What was even more wondrous was the contrast between the lush northern route to Hana versus the arid southern return route. We probably drove close to an hour without seeing any signs of life aside from an occasional cow or passing car on a very narrow road.
I know our first trip to Maui will not soon be forgotten! Mahalo, EJ, Dave and Rosi!

What a beautiful trip!!! Your pics make me want to return again. Since you mentioned your “first trip to Maui”, I am assuming it won’t be your last. Check one for your “bucket list’.
I knew that both of you would totally enjoy HAWAII.Tell ERIC that I also was selected to join in the stage performance at the LUAU.The rumor at the LUAU was that they only selected the handsomest of men from the audience. I hope ERIC performed better than I , since your sweet grandmother said I looked like a nerd on the stage.LOVE YOU-GRANDPA.
